Background
We are preparing an innovative event for young people to meet and experience a 1-week role-playing adventure in Iceland based on the cultural background of Norse mythology. Players will be immersed in the story in small international groups in an epic adventure in which their actions have a major impact on all the other groups that get involved in the adventure at the same time.
The game sessions will take place inside as well as outside, as we experience the breathtaking Icelandic landscape as a backdrop to the rich cultural heritage. We will use our own custom-designed role-playing system for this and you will become part of the system's evolution.
This is not a LARP. Imagine this as an advanced pen-and-paper role-playing game with a few innovative features which you have probably never experienced before. We will use a few interesting locations as the background for the game to enhance the game's atmosphere.
Date of the event: 29.09.2014 - 06.10.2014
(Please remember that depending on your location you might need an additional travel day before and after the event.)
The event is funded by the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union that supports intercultural exchange of young people. This allows us to cover travel costs and accommodation costs for the participants.
Attention: The event is an Erasmus+ youth exchange which means that you could potentially get time off from school.
What about sightseeing and resting?
You will have one free day that you can spend as you like, either with sightseeing or resting or hiking on your own. We will give you some hints about places worth visiting. In the evening we will have dinner together and start again with a short gaming session.
Who can apply?
In order to apply you need to be between 18 and 30 years old. Currently we can only accept participants from the following countries: Germany, Greece, Iceland.
We have a total of 30 slots available. All applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the coordination team. The best performances will receive an email notification on August 12th 2014 of their preliminary selection for the role-playing event. You have to respond to this email within 48 hours to confirm your participation in the event.
Update: Application is still open for applicants from Iceland but closed for all other countries.
What about accommodation and catering?
We will have a house for ourselves with 24 beds spread along 7 rooms in a youth hostel style. In addition we have 6 mattresses on the floor in a viking sleeping hall.
We will be in charge of our own food and we will cook together. This means we expect everyone to help out.
Who is organizing the event?
The people behind this event are informal youth groups from Germany, Greece, and Iceland that are interested in cultural exchange, creating innovative events, and role-playing games. Overall coordination is in the hands of TALE (Team Adventure Learning Europe).
Take a look at the "Coordinators" page for a detailed description of the people planning the event.
Will there be more events of this type?
We certainly hope so. We are already working on different plans and if you are located in a different country that is not eligible at the moment you could get in touch with us and help us open up the event for your country as well. You can also sign up below so that you will be informed directly when we offer another role-playing event.
Does the event cost anything?
We cover the travel costs for the flight, the travel from the airport to our location in iceland, lodging, food and softdrinks and any activities in iceland. You just need to take care of your travel to the airport in your home country. If you are from Iceland you need to come to our location by yourself.
